This Thanksgiving, We're Thankful for You, and Turducken

by: David Nickelson, Director of Research

Turducken. A chicken stuffed into a duck stuffed into a turkey. While the concept of birds stuffed into birds dates to printed recipes as far back as the late 1700s, the word turducken first appeared in print in 1982. It wasn't until John Madden popularized the phrase during an NFL Thanksgiving football broadcast in 1997 that it captured the imagination of a hungry audience. Here is another favorite further popularizing the Turducken movement a few years back.

The US patent system has been slow to catch on to the turducken craze, with the first use of the term not appearing in a US patent application until US 2006/0062892 A1, and even that relegated the lofty turducken to a mere ingredient in pet food.

Whether your Thanksgiving table will include turkey, turducken or tofu, the arrival of Thanksgiving gives many of us the opportunity to spend time with family and friends while taking a moment to ponder the things we're thankful for.
