How Many Soybeans is Your Intellectual Property Worth?

by: David Nickelson, Director of Research

In an earlier post (here), our CEO, Luke Barbin wrote of the risks associated with off-shore patent research services and the value in being able to meet your research providers face to face as we here at Techson do with so many of our clients.

I'd like to highlight an additional risk to off-shore research firms. The risk of intellectual property theft.

As the US and foreign countries volley increased tariffs back and forth in their ongoing trade wars, it's important to remember that one of the primary justifications for the US to impose tariffs was over intellectual property theft as this recent Forbes article highlights

Whether you believe the US is involved in a trade war or not may depend on the particular clients you serve or the industries in your local region, but there's no denying that trade tensions have escalated over the past year. Thus far retaliation has been largely confined to corresponding increased tariffs on US goods, but if problems persist, foreign states may decide that the off-shore research firms with years of invention disclosures would make juicy and local targets completely under their jurisdiction.

In the US our legal framework spells out what type of activity traversing the internet the government is allowed to monitor. In many foreign states governments have free reign to monitor virtually anything. Is it really worth risking years of your intellectual property and new products pipeline to save a few bucks?

At Techson we're entirely US based, we meet with our clients regularly to serve their intellectual property needs. Give us a call to see how we can serve you.
